A Frenchman has avoided jail after downloading child abuse images and video in the UK.

Benois de Godos, 40, used the internet at his girlfriend’s house in Bideford, Devon, to access peer-to-peer sites and find films showing children as young as five being abused, reports the Sun.

During a trip to France, he was stopped at Gatwick airport. He later claimed he had downloaded the material by accident.

Prosecutor Janice Eagles said that ‘he found it easier to obtain this material in this country, which may have been the reason for the length of his stay.’

The footage showed children aged between five and 13 being abused. The material of 179 movies included 68 Category A movies, which are the worst kind under British law.

De Godos pleaded guilty to three charges of making indecent images of children at Exeter crown court.

‘The images and films were appalling and by downloading them you were contributing to a trade in human misery in which youngsters are exploited for the sexual gratification of people like you,’ said Judge Ian Lawrie.

De Godo received only an eight-month suspended sentence. He is returning to France.

French porn addict avoids jail after downloading sick child abuse films while staying in Devon

A Frenchman with an addiction to pornography downloaded child abuse movies while staying in Devon because he believed it was easier to do so than in his own country.

Benois de Godos used the internet connection at a girlfriend’s home in Bideford to access peer to peer websites where he accessed films showing children as young as five being abused.

He returned to his home in Cannes but was arrested at Gatwick Airport after a police investigation had identified him.

Experts found 179 movies or images on three portable hard drives including 68 films showing the most serious sort of abuse of children by adults.

He claimed he had downloaded the material by accident while building up a massive library of pirated feature films which were more readily accessible in Britain than France.

De Godos, aged 40, formerly of Ethelwynne Brown Close, Bideford, and now living in La Bocco, Cannes, admitted three charges of making indecent images.

He was jailed for eight months, suspended for two years, by Judge Ian Lawrie, QC, at Exeter Crown Court. The sentence means he was able to fly straight back to France.

The judge told him:”The images and films were appalling and by downloading them you were contributing to a trade in human misery in which youngsters are exploited for the sexual gratification of people like you.”

Miss Janice Eagles, prosecuting, said de Godos is a French national who was staying with a friend in Bideford when he accessed the material through peer to peer sites.

She said the female friend was initially arrested after her IP address was linked to illegal downloads. She was cleared by the inquiry but told police that de Godos had been staying there at the relevant times.
He was arrested and the images were found on three storage devices he had used while staying in Britain. He had 69 movies at the worst category A and eight at category B and 103 stills at the lowest category C.

The material showed children aged five to 14 and one movie was 21 minutes long and he had catalogued them under subfolders with names which reflected the type of activity depicted.

Miss Eagles said: “It seems he found it easier to obtain this material in this country, which may have been the reason for the length of his stay.”

Miss Kelly Scrivener, defending, said de Godos had a legitimate interest in mainstream movies which were more easy to access in Britain where the copyright laws are less strict than France.

She said he was addicted to adult pornography and had downloaded the child abuse material by accident but then viewed it.

She said he plans to go straight back to France and has no intention of coming back to Britain because his eight year relationship with the woman in Bideford ended as a result of this case.

He is now paying privately for psychotherapy in France to address his addiction to pornography.
