Don’t free Collette’s killer

June 2004

THE family of murdered six-year-old Collette Gallacher say they will do everything they can to make sure her killer stays in prison.

They have learned that Adam Stein who raped and murdered the Corby schoolgirl is applying for parole and could be out of prison later this year.

Stein admitted murdering Collette in 1986 and was sentenced to life in prison with the judge, Mr Justice Tucker, recommending he serve a minimum of 25 years.

But on Friday a probation officer visited Collette’s mother and said that Stein was applying for parole.

Collettes mum said: “This man ruined our lives.

“The judge said he should serve at least 25 years but 19 years later he could be out enjoying Christmas – this is not right.

“This man knew what he was going to do to my little girl and I am not going to let it lie.”

Northampton Crown Court heard Stein lured Collette into his home in Ashley Avenue, Corby, as she walked to catch a bus to Our Lady’s Infants School on February 28, 1986.
More than 120 police officers were involved in the hunt for the girl. Her body was found in Stein’s attic after he tried to kill himself and admitted in a suicide note that he had ‘done wrong’.

Mrs Holmes, together with family and friends, including her daughter and Collette’s grandparents have launched a campaign to keep Stein, now 45, in prison.

Hundreds of people have signed a petition protesting at Stein’s possible release.

Mrs Holmes, who has another daughter will also write to the Parole Board, which will decide if Stein is eligible for release.
Collette’s grandfather said: “When he was sentenced everybody in the court stood up and clapped. The judge said he should serve at least 25 years and so he should.”

His wife said: “I had hoped I would be gone before he was ever released – I hate him so much.”

A Home Office spokesman said that although the judge recommended Stein serve 25 years, the then Home Secretary Douglas Hurd set a 20-year tariff. That means Stein can now apply for parole.

The spokesman said: “The family can make their views known to the Parole Board who will take these into consideration before any decision is taken.”
