Man jailed for abusing boy for years threatened to kill cat in emotional blackmail of victim.
George Michael Robert Owen, of Colliery Road, Wrexham, was locked up for nine years.
A man who sexually abused a boy for several years threatened to drop a cat out of a window as he subjected his victim to emotional blackmail, a court heard.
George Michael Robert Owen, 61, of Colliery Road, Wrexham, but previously of Penmaenmawr, had initially denied seven charges of indecent assault but later admitted his guilt.
He appeared from custody at Caernarfon Crown Court and was jailed for nine years today.
Judge Huw Rees said: “You groomed him for sexual services and the abuse occurred once or twice a week when he was young and vulnerable.
“The effect on him has been devastating and lifelong.”
The court heard the abuse started in Llandudno in the 1990s when the boy, who cannot be named for legal reasons, was nine years old.
Mark Connor, prosecuting, said: “The defendant befriended the boy and invited him to his room where he had a television linked to satellite channels.
“He would give the boy gifts and sweets. He was effectively grooming him.”
Mr Connor said that, at times, Owen used emotional blackmail to ensure the boy complied with his demands.
“He threatened to kill a cat, holding it by the scruff of the neck and outside a window,” the barrister said.
The abuse stopped when the boy moved away from the area when he was about 15 years old.
In a Victim Personal Statement summarised in court, the boy, who is now in his mid-30s, said Owen’s behaviour had been a “weight hanging over him for much of his adult life” and he regretted not reporting the abuse earlier.
Owen was arrested and interviewed by police and denied all knowledge of the allegations.
Simon Mills, defending, said Owen accepted he faced serious charges and there were many aggravating features.
After his release from prison, Owen will be subject to an indefinite Sexual Harm Prevention Order and his name will remain on the Sex Offenders Register until further order.
