Dorking school apologises after ex-deputy head teacher jailed for secretly filming naked children

The head teacher of a Dorking primary school has issued an apology after a former deputy head teacher was convicted of taking photos and videos of naked children.

Andy Robson, who secretly filmed dozens of young pupils while they were getting changed, was jailed for two years on Friday morning (July 22) at Guildford Crown Court.

At the sentencing hearing, the court heard how the 42-year-old’s crimes spanned a number of years, involved a total of 70 children at the two Surrey schools he worked at as a deputy head teacher and as a safeguarding leader.

Robson, of Leslie Road in Dorking, was employed by Surrey Hills Church of England Primary School, which has sites in Westcott and Abinger Common, and then from September 2015 he worked at Ewell Castle School up until the day of his arrest earlier this year on February 22.

During the court hearing, details were read out about the extent of Robson’s crimes and prosecutor Lee Harris explained a special meeting was held at the schools to inform parents what had happened.

Reacting to Robson’s sentence, Jennifer Ratcliff – who is the current head teacher at Surrey Hills – apologised for the distress Robson’s actions had caused and vowed that steps had been taken to improve protection for children at the school.

She said: “We are shocked and saddened by the actions of a former member of staff at Surrey Hills Church of England School, which have led to his conviction.

“On behalf of the school, I would like to apologise to all those who have been affected by Mr Robson’s crimes.

“At Surrey Hills, we have a strong commitment to safeguarding and the protection of all children, and have taken steps to ensure these remain rigorous.

“We have worked closely with the authorities and with those affected by these events, and parents have been kept informed throughout.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with all concerned.”

Speaking after Robson was jailed on Friday, Detective Inspector Jon Vogel, from Surrey Police’s Paedophile Online Investigation Team, said: “A warrant was carried out at Robson’s home address and we found a device containing indecent images of children at the premises.

“Following further inquiries, we established that these images were of pupils getting changed.

“The next step was to contact Surrey Children’s Services to ensure that the appropriate steps were taken to safeguard those involved and protect their well-being.

“We have had their full co-operation throughout this investigation.

“Taking and making indecent images of children is deplorable and the sentence handed out today reflects that.

“I hope that the outcome as well as Robson receiving a 10-year sexual harm prevention order (SHPO) and being put on the Sex Offenders Register, is some consolation to the victims and their families.”
