Wernher Brion – Bexley, London

Prison support officer who raped teenage student at ‘karaoke party’ is jailed

A man who raped a teenage student has been branded a ‘predator’ and jailed for 12 years.

The prison support officer took advantage of the girl during a karaoke-themed house party.

Wernher Brion, who is more than 40 years older than his victim, targeted the 17-year-old while his wife worked a night shift as a nurse.

Brion was ‘desperate’ to have sex with the girl because she had her nipples pierced, the Old Bailey heard.

The 59-year-old once worked at the high-security jail Belmarsh, infamous for holding terrorists.

When he attacked his victim, the court heard how he bolted the living room doors so he would not be disturbed.

The assault, which took place in Abbey Wood in London, was facilitated when the Brion ‘ingratiated’ himself with the students by buying them booze.

He had bought the group alcohol at a pub in Bexleyheath back in July 2015, and waited until the evening of July 19 to attack the girl.

Despite claiming the underage girl ‘fancied him’, he was convicted of rape and labelled a ‘danger’ to teens.

Recorder Malcolm Fortune said: ‘It was the route for you to meet your people and younger females in particular.

‘You took advantage of her. You were not only old enough to be her father but also her grandfather, something I regard as a serious aggravating factor.

‘By your actions you have grievously abused your position as a host and the trust that any ordinary and right-minded person would have expected you to observe when she was so affected by drink or tiredness.

‘You had preyed upon her from the start when she told you that she had pierced nipples.

‘I consider your actions to have been predatory to have satisfied any feelings of lust you may have had from being surrounded by young females.

‘I am satisfied you are dangerous given your attitude both in the past and presently, your behaviour towards her and your complete lack of insight as to the damage and harm you have inflicted.

‘This was the rape of a vulnerable young woman who has now suffered severe psychological damage.’

Brion was handed a 12-year sentence with an extended licence period of three years, guaranteeing he will serve at least eight years.

Brion denied rape but the jury believed the prosecution’s arguments that he had pounced on the girl when she was in the living room recovering after feeling unwell.

A man who raped a 17-year-old girl at a house party in Bexley has been jailed for 12 years.

Wernher Brion, 59, was found guilty today of rape following a trial at the Old Bailey.
Police were called on July 19 to an address in Welling after being contacted by a 17-year-old’s father and after speaking to the girl, she told police she had been raped.

The girl was taken to hospital and specialist officers from the Met’s sexual offences, exploitation and child abuse command were assigned to investigate the case and support her.

Police said the girl had been raped by a man she had met that night.

It was at a pub the girl and friends met Brion, of Sydney Road, who brought them drinks and invited them back to his house for a party once the pub had shut.

While at his address the victim began to feel unwell and was helped to a sofa in an unused room to allow her to sleep and recover.

Later in the evening Brion entered the room, used an armchair to barricade the door and then raped the girl.

Detective Constable Aidan Kersley said: “The defendant committed a predatory and ruthless attack on a defenceless young woman for his own sexual gratification.

“I would like thank the victim in this case and the other young witnesses for the courage they showed throughout this investigation and the subsequent trial.

“The sentence handed to Brion reflects the gravity of the offence and the impact it has had on the victim’s life.”

Brion was quickly identified and he was arrested at his home shortly after the complaint was made.

Detective Inspector Kate Kieran said: “This case demonstrates that anyone who may have suffered a similar attack can be reassured that if they come forward their complaint will be taken seriously and investigated fully by the Metropolitan Police.

“Anyone who believes they have been a victim of crime is urged to call police on 101 or, in an emergency, dial 999.”
