Evil rapist jailed after attacking lone female students while wearing gorilla and Yoda masks
Elvis Sidaway, 54, used an ‘‘attack kit” before carrying out five sexual assaults in Selly Oak, Quinton and Edgbaston
An evil rapist who “stalked the dark streets” of south Birmingham attacking young female students whilst wearing gorilla and Yoda masks has been jailed for 21 years.
Registered sex offender Elvis Sidaway, 54, used an ‘‘attack kit” before carrying out five sexual assaults and one rape on women walking alone at night in Selly Oak, Quinton and Edgbaston.
His campaign of terror lasted four months and only came to an end in February of this year when a sharp-eyed police officer noticed him driving suspiciously.
Judge Nicholas Webb told Sidaway that if he hadn’t been arrested then, he was “in no doubt” there would have been many more victims.
He imposed an extended sentence of 27 years on Sidaway – made up of 21 years in custody and a further six years on licence.
Sidaway, of Fountain Road, Edgbaston, was convicted at Birmingham crown court of oral rape and three charges of threatening women with a knife. He pleaded guilty to five sexual assaults.
The trial was told the paint mixer had previous convictions for sex attacks in Sutton Coldfield in 2010 where he used a knife to threaten his victim.
The court heard how the attacks took place between November last year and February this year.
In two of the assaults he wore a gorilla mask, in another he disguised his face with a Yoda – a character from Star Wars – mask, and in the others covered his face with a Hoodie.
Some of his victims were threatened with a gas fire lighter, but in others he brandished a knife.
The most serious was in December 2016 when a young woman student was orally raped by Sidaway in Heeley Road, Selly Oak, as she walked home in the early hours of the morning.
The court heard how because of his previous convictions, Sidaway was forensically aware and never left any clues.
By February police had stepped up patrols in south Birmingham and a sharp-eyed officer noticed Sidaway’s Peugeot 207 driving suspiciously around Selly Oak in the early hours of the morning.
He was pulled over and inside was what Sidaway admitted was his “attack kit” of a black hoodie, condoms, a gas fire lighter, glasses to disguise himself and some Viagra-type pills.
No mitigation or explanation was offered in court for Sidaway’s offending, but giving evidence he gave the jury an insight into his sex life.
He admitted to having sexual problems for which he needed Viagra-type pills.
But he denied he attacked women to gain sexual pleasure, instead he said he carried out the attacks “to gain company”.
Sidaway said he visited a regular “lady of the night” and paid her for sex, and was also an avid user of phone sex chat lines.
Sentencing Sidaway, Judge Webb told him: “You carried out a campaign of sex attacks on young women in Selly Oak, Quinton and Edgbaston”.
He said the attacks took place between November 2016 and February of this year
“I have no doubt it would have continued because when you were arrested at 4am in February you were dressed in what you told us was your ‘attack kit’”, he said.
Judge Webb continued: “You drove around the streets – particularly Selly Oak – after midnight for an hour or two, stalking a potential target.
“You cruised the dark streets looking for young, solitary women making their way home.
“You ambushed your victims – either from behind, or jumping out in front of them.
“These attacks had a dreadful effect on the victims – some have had their studies disrupted, they have trouble sleeping, some have difficulty forming relationships with men.
“The effects will last for years and in one case, a career as a doctor is now in doubt.”
He concluded: “I have no doubt you will continue to be a very dangerous sex offender as you cannot accept what you have done.”
