Paedophile Brian McDowell has been jailed for nine years
Sex attacker Brian McDowell is today starting a nine-year jail sentence after attempting to rape two girls.
The 61-year-old paedophile committed a catalogue of sex crimes against two victims over four years.
And he also sexually abused a third girl.
Now the defendant – who has a previous conviction for indecently assaulting two girls in the early 1990s – has been locked up at Stoke-on-Trent Crown Court.
Prosecutor Peter Grice said the offending came to light when one of the girls told a school teacher she had been assaulted.
The police were informed and McDowell went on to admit a total of 17 sexual offences.
The court heard the victims have been affected by the abuse.
McDowell, of Meaford Drive, Blurton, pleaded guilty to four attempted rapes of a child under 13; two attempted rapes; six sexual assaults; three sexual assaults of a child under 13; and two assaults of a child under 13 by penetration.
He asked for a further offence of sexual assault of a child under 13 to be taken into consideration.
Paul Cliff, mitigating, conceded the victims would have suffered a degree of psychological harm.
He said the defendant is in poor health and has not worked since he was involved in an industrial accident in 2003.
Mr Cliff added: “He has asked to me to say he is sorry and I do so.”
Judge David Fletcher made McDowell the subject of an indefinite Sexual Harm Prevention Order and placed him on the sex offenders’ register for the rest of his life.
Judge Fletcher said: “This is the second time in your life that you have been convicted of sexually abusing children. You were sent to prison in 1993 for similar type offences.
“You have completely and utterly wrecked and destroyed your victims’ innocence.”
McDowell will serve half the sentence with the rest on licence.
