Married to a child abuser: Wife, 54, tells of the awful moment police knocked on her door to reveal her husband of 15 years was a paedophile rapist – Peter Yates of Darwen and son Shaun Yates of Birmingham

Michelle Baxter, 54, was told husband Peter Yates was a child abuser in 2014

Two-and-a-half years later the abuser was jailed for life at Preston Crown Court

She says she had no idea and is now divorcing him – but is hounded in the street

The wife of a paedophile has talked of how her life fell apart the moment that the police knocked on the door and revealed his shocking past.

Michelle Baxter, now 54, had recently celebrated her crystal wedding anniversary with Peter Yates when officers came to the house in December 2014.

Since then, he has been jailed for life after the court heard how he lured young girls to his home with sweets and abused them in the 1980s and 1990s.

Michelle, who began divorce proceeding immediately, has been shunned and insulted ever since, hounded and insulted in the street when she goes out.

Now she has spoken out, telling the world how he ‘groomed’ her over the decades to believe his lies and cover up the shocking abuse he was responsible for.

She said: ‘He didn´t just groom his victims he groomed me. That carried on to the bitter end. I need people to understand that I knew nothing.’

She added: ‘He was the perfect gentleman to my family. Everybody that met him thought he was a lovely man.’

Michelle, a former carer, first met Yates when she moved to Darwen, Lancashire – where she still lives – in October 2000, shortly after her first marriage broke down.

The pair bonded over their love for dogs and Michelle walked down the aisle after a whirlwind three month courtship.

He told her that he had been accused of rape in the 1990s but made up a convincing story to cover up his abusive past.

And she had no reason not to believe the man, who had been nothing but a gentleman to her since the day they met.

She said: ‘Peter told me he´d been accused of being a paedophile in the 1990s.

‘He said his second wife, who has now died, had family who were making up tales to get money for the house.

‘But he was charming and lovely to me, so I believed him that the vicious rumours weren´t true.’

Peter continued to charm Michelle, who was blinded by love, with lavish trips to Egypt. He also bought her several dogs and chickens.

Rather than staying in Darwen, he took her to Accrington, 10 miles away, for their weekly food shops.

His job as supervisor of a CCTV monitoring station meant working four days on and four days off and he also timed their sex life to fit in with his shift pattern.

Michelle said: ‘On the fourth day off he had to make love in the afternoon – we´d be in bed between 3pm and 3.30pm.

But over time the relationship turned sour and Michelle (pictured in 2011) began to notice his unusual quirks I used to bring it up and tell him I was fed up with it. It was the same every time, with no spontaneity. But he always had some excuse.’

Yates, who had four children from two previous relationships, including his eldest, Shaun, 44, was often out of the house, pursuing his photography hobby.

So when, by 2008, their married life was punctuated by arguments, Michelle tried to raise his spirits by buying him photography gadgets and cooking him tasty meals.

That was until December 11, 2014, when her world came crashing down, after the police arrived on their doorstep and took him in for questioning.

That night, Yates told her the accusations that had been made in the 1990s had resurfaced.

And, unable to accept that her marriage had been a sham, she believed him when he insisted he was innocent.

But doubt stirred in her mind when, a few days after the police interview, he drove her to a tip and disposed of a bashed up laptop.

When Yates was interviewed again on March 13 2015, he still maintained his innocence.

By then, though, the couple´s relationship was breaking down and Michelle began to fear the worst.

Just a few days later on June 30, police turned up at their home at 6.30am and arrested Peter.

Distraught, Michelle started divorce proceedings immediately. Still, Yates wrote loving letters from jail protesting his innocence.

Yates’ son Shaun Yates, 44, of Birmingham, was also sentenced to eight years, after he was convicted of two counts of rape

But on June 9 2016, after a seven-week trial Yates was found guilty of 36 child sex offences including seven counts of rape and 22 of indecent assault.

Yates, 67, was jailed for 25 years at Preston Crown Court for the crimes committed in the 1980s and 1990s and given a Sexual Harm Preventation Order

His son, Shaun Yates, 44, of Birmingham, was also sentenced to eight years, after he was convicted of two counts of rape.

Shocked Michelle said: ‘I was in denial. I thought to myself: `No I haven´t married a paedophile, you would have known´.

‘You don´t know, though, because they don´t just groom the children they groom everybody around them.

‘I don´t think he ever loved me, but I´m not bothered about it, because I wouldn´t want a paedophile to love me.

She continued: ‘I don´t think I´ll ever be in a relationship again. I love the countryside and dogs and I´ll be happy without someone.

‘I just hope and pray those poor young girls, women now, can try and be happy as well – that´s all I wish for.’
