13 years have passed / Operation Ore Child Abusers – Yorkshire Police

As Operation Ore drew to a close in Yorkshire, the detective who headed the operation in West Yorkshire said there were thousands more suspected paedophiles who must be tracked down to save children from abuse.
Det Supt Graham Shaw said that the Operation Ore Investigation only targeted people who used a single website, which had been running for a short period of time, and added that “the americans policed it and we ended up getting all those names, but just imagine all those other sites in all the other countries in the world where people will have gone instead.”

“What we achieved was great, the success rate for Operation Ore was in the region of 60 to 80 per cent, but without a doubt it is just the tip of the iceberg.

West Yorkshire Police made 127 arrests and charged 51 people. 40 people were sentenced and 33 cautioned.

North Yorkshire Police searched 53 premises, seizing more than 100 computers and thousands of CDs, floppy disks and videos.
Officers made 43 arrests, from which 23 people have been charged or received official cautions. South Yorkshire Police seized more than 80 computers after searching 69 premises.
Sixty-six people were arrested, with 23 charged. All but one have been convicted in court. A further 18 were cautioned.

Humberside Police have made 26 arrests so far and 17 people have been charged and convicted, and six more people received cautions.

York man created indecent images of children

A MAN with a compulsion to search out pornographic images of young women had 175 indecent images of children on his computer files, a court heard.

Kevin Holland, 44, was given a two-year conditional discharge after pleading guilty to child pornography charges at York Magistrates Court yesterday.

Holland, of Hempland Drive, Heworth, had pleaded guilty to nine charges of creating an indecent image of a child and one charge of possession of indecent images of children. The court heard that Holland became suicidal following his arrest in November last year, as part of an international crackdown on child pornography.

His solicitor, Colin Byrne, said: “He went to the cliff edge, and looked down the face, before deciding not to jump.”

Mr Byrne said Holland suffered from a type of obsessive compulsive disorder which made him compulsively seek pornographic images of young women aged 16 to 19.

He said after his arrest Holland had sought medical treatment for his obsession, and had been seeing a psychotherapist since earlier this year.

Mr Byrne said Holland had come across the pictures of children in his search for the legal pornographic images of 16 to 19-year-olds. A total of 175 indecent images of children were found in his computer files, 166 downloaded from the internet.

The images were mostly mild in content on an official five-point scale of obsenity, with the majority graded level one, but the collection contained some images graded two, three and four.

Mr Byrne said the images of children had been found as a by-product of the obsessive search for young women, with 98 per cent of the images of children used then deleted from the computer. David Garnett, prosecuting, said Holland had subscribed to a website which had many indecent images of young people on it.

He said: “There are nine images he admitted making, one of which is level two.”

Holland was told by magistrates that if he did not offend again within the two years “that would be the end of the matter”.

He was ordered to pay costs of £120 and to forfeit the drive on the computer where the images were stored, and all the disks and storage materials containing indecent child images.

sentence….  Stephen Clarke, (51), of Willerby, jailed for 10 months, he will also serve an extended two-year period on licence after being released, and placed on the sex offenders register.

🔴Gary Andrew Peacock, (37) of Hall Bower. Guilty. Will be sentenced at Leeds Crown Court.

May 2003

Man had thousands of child abuse pictures

A HUDDERSFIELD man had nearly 10,000 indecent pictures of children on his computer, a court heard.

Gary Andrew Peacock, 37, of Hall Bower, pleaded guilty at Dewsbury Magistrates’ Court to owning 22 indecent pictures and three short pornographic films depicting children.

He is to be sentenced at Leeds Crown Court. He was allowed unconditional bail.

The magistrates were told the items referred to in the charges were part of 9,800 child porn images belonging to Peacock which police found.

Of the 25 images featured in the charges, seven were classed as level five – the most serious level.

The rest were of level four. They featured children aged between three and 14.

Some images featured sexual activity between adults and children and included elements of sado-masochism.

The court was told the images were found as part of the huge Operation Ore, carried out by police across West Yorkshire.

They were acting on information supplied by US authorities investigating worldwide child pornography.

Presiding magistrate Mrs Nan Chadwick told Peacock he would be sentenced at the Crown Court.

She added: “Some of these images are certainly pretty gruesome, some of the worst we have experienced.”

Mrs Chadwick said that because of that, the ages of the children and the number of images the magistrates did not think their powers were enough to deal with Peacock.

‘Prison would be bad for my health’

May 2003

A COMPANY director who downloaded images of six-year-olds being sexually abused escaped jail after telling a court he was too ill for prison.

🔴Patrick Kear, 32, formerly of Painthorpe Lane, Crigglestone, Wakefield, now of Somerset Road, Almondbury, Huddersfield, was given a 36-month supervision order and placed on the Sex Offenders Register for five years.
He admitted 20 charges of possessing indecent images of children.

Dewsbury magistrates yesterday heard Kear was recently diagnosed with multiple sclerosis and was due to take part in treatment trials at Cambridge Royal Hospital.

Kear’s Wakefield address was raided by police on December 18, 2001 following an internet child porn investigation led by the FBI.

Police discovered around 1,300 indecent images of children.

Some of them showed girls as young as six performing sexual acts.

Prosecutor Stephen Gration said Kear had eventually admitted downloading the images. In mitigation, solicitor Rodney Lester said jailing Kear would be “harsh in the extreme.”
He said: “This is a misdeed which should be consigned to history.

“My client has been diagnosed with multiple sclerosis. He’s never going to get better and he can have an attack at any time.

“He requires special attention. Prison is not appropriate for him. He cannot go to prison. This forms a medical condition that enables you to avoid sending him to prison.”

Nan Chadwick, chairman of the bench, told Kear: “We have considered all our sentencing options, including prison, but we feel a community rehabilitation order appropriate.”
🔴Destroyed

Kear was told he would be placed under the supervision of a probation officer and will have to attend 120 sessions of a sex offenders programme. He was ordered to pay 60 costs and has had his computer equipment destroyed.

In the same court, the case against Colin Edward Levy, 56, of Jumples Court, Mixenden, Halifax, who faces 14 charges of possessing indecent images of children, was adjourned until June 25. Levy denies the charges.

And an internet pervert who downloaded more than 9,800 indecent images of children was told by magistrates he would almost certainly go to jail.

Gary Andrew Peacock, of Hall Bower, Newsome, Huddersfield, pleaded guilty to 25 charges of possessing indecent images of children when he appeared before Dewsbury magistrates yesterday.

Hudson escapes prison sentence

A MAN escaped a jail sentence for possessing child abuse images

Management consultant Graham Hudson, 46, of Briar Hill View, Bradley, had pleaded guilty to 20 charges of possessing indecent photos .

But in sentencing him to 150 hours’ community service, Judge Norman Jones, the Recorder of Leeds, said: “There is no suggestion of distribution and no suggestion that you have paedophilliac tendencies at all.”

The prosecution accepted that Hudson had accessed a pornographic website out of curiosity.

Hudson said: “It is a shocking and stupid thing that I have done.

“I have a wife and a young daughter and many close relatives and only hope that people realise they are suffering. I hope people will not be cruel to them.”

Hudson is a former chairman of the Huddersfield Town Patrons’ Association.

Mr Jon Gibson, prosecuting, said the police recovered details of customers who paid by credit card to view the images on an American porn website.

Hudson admitted using his credit card to receive images in 1999.

Three hundred deleted images of child porn were recovered from computers at his home.

Mr Justin Crossley, for Hudson, said his client had committed the offences out of a “morbid sense of curiosity”. He was “repulsed” at the images and deleted them.

He added: “Mr Hudson’s punishment began the day he was arrested.”

He said Hudson had lost his job as a management consultant and his part-time job as a football commentator on local radio.

He had been abused and threats had been put on Town’s website.

Mr Crossley said Hudson was concerned for his family and friends.

His wife, who sobbed throughout the court case, had stood by him, as had several friends.

Child-porn pervert faces jail sentence

March 2003

AN INTERNET pervert who had over 9,000 indecent images of children, some as young as four, on his computer, was told he faced a possible jail term.

Richard Andrew Brown, 57, formerly of Great Horton, Bradford but now residing with a friend on Hollin Park Avenue, Leeds, pleaded guilty to 19 charges of possessing indecent pictures of children on his computer, which he had downloaded from the internet using his credit card as payment.

Magistrates in Dewsbury were told how police raided Brown’s house at 7am on January 8, reacting to information provided by the FBI’s Operation Ore. Brown, who spoke only to confirm his name and current address, also pleaded guilty to another charge that he had produced a home-made booklet containing 18 indecent images of young girls.

🔹Crying

Zafar Siddique, prosecuting, told the court that some of the images recovered from Brown’s two computers contained images of girls as young as four being sexually assaulted, some while crying or in obvious distress.

One image, categorised as among the most severe, was of a girl aged between seven and nine years-old tied by her ankles and wrists to a chair.

Mr Siddique said Brown had access to the US-based Landslide internet site being investigated by the FBI.

He said: “The charges range from level four and level three. The majority are of level four in nature and there is one which is level five, that being the most serious in nature.”
Magistrates told Brown they were only able to pass a sentence of 12 months imprisonment and did not feel they had adequate power, adding they were referring his case to Leeds Crown Court. A date was not set.

Brown was granted conditional bail and told he must report to a police station every three days.
